Stories of human trafficking survivors have reached headlines also in Finland in recent years. In restaurant business, abuse of employees has been reported, and stories about asylum seekers who have been victims of human trafficking have appeared in Finnish news.
Hope for work and better income unite most human trafficking victims. Hope for a better future drives especially young people to end up victims of human trafficking. Civil society organisations are doing very important work to prevent human trafficking. CSOs also assist the returning victims in the countries these young women and men have started.
Financing for development has a significant role in supporting organisations and fight against human trafficking. With sufficient funding, it is possible to create opportunities for education and income generating activities, and enhance gender equality – thus affecting the root causes of human trafficking.
Join us in the discussion about the work of Nigerian civil society organisations and the role of development financing in prevention of human trafficking.
Invited speakers in the event are:
* FinnWID´s Nigerian partner organization Ida Renaissance project coordinator Roland Nwoha * Toisenlaisia Tarinoita-campaign activist, former victim of human trafficking, Itohan Okundaye. * Nina Tenhio, Development Policy Adviser from Fingo ry (national platform of Finnish Development NGO´s) The event is part of FinnWID’s campaign Other kind of stories.
