In this year’s first newsletter, we would like to inform you about upcoming conferences,
updates on the GERIF website and also about possibilities of getting more involved with
the GERIF network.
UPCOMING CONFERENCE
Academic Network on Global Education and Learning
Early Career Researchers Conference
11-12 June 2020
University of Oulu
ANGEL conference aimed at early career researchers will be held at the University of Oulu,
Finland from 11-12 June 2020.
* Participants: PhD students and post-doctoral researchers
* Submission of abstracts and registration opens: 17 February 2020
* Deadline for abstracts: 1 April 2020
* Virtual participation will be facilitated
Focus and aim
The conference focuses on research on global education and learning. The aim is to provide
early career researchers with an inspiring platform for discussing, re-visiting and
analysing the complexity of conceptualisations.
Further information and a facility for application will be available ASAP via the Oulu and
ANGEL websites.
UPCOMING GERIF MEETING 10th of June
On the 10th of June, in connection to the Early Career Researchers’ Conference, the GERIF
network is organizing a meeting together with the Academic Network on Global Education and
Learning (ANGEL). The meeting is open to everyone interested in global education research.
The idea of a joint meeting is to enhance cooperation between the Finnish GERIF network
and the International ANGEL network. The meeting provides a chance to get to know people
from both networks as well as to plan future activities. The exact time and place will be
announced later.
BLOG POST ON INTERCULTURAL STORYCRAFTING EXCHANGE
Oona Piipponen, doctoral student at the University of Eastern Finland has published a
research-based blog post on the GERIF website with the title How do children interpret
encounters that happen during an international story exchange project? In an accessible
way, Piipponen describes the storycrafting exchange method and summarizes the findings of

CHAIRING AT FERA 2020?
Are you interested in co-organizing a working group for global education research at the
next Finnish Educational Research Association’s (FERA) Conference? The conference will be
held in Helsinki 3-4th November 2020. The GERIF network coordinators are planning on
submitting a working group proposal and we would like to invite those of you who are
interested to host the working group together. In practice, this entails writing the
proposal, reviewing abstracts and chairing sessions.

REMINDER: UPCOMING CONFERENCE
The minority research profile at Åbo Akademi University invites you to its fifth annual
seminar that will take place in Vaasa, Finland from May 6th to 8th, 2020. The 2020 theme
is “Curriculums for Social Justice” with the aim to collectively discuss how to develop
justice-oriented pedagogies. With permeating signs of racism, harassment and violence, as
well as increasing social inequalities both locally and globally, there is a need to
reflect on the role of education in relation to social justice.
