Fingo - Finnish development NGOs - has commissioned a study about the potential effects of
the EU Green Deal Farm to Fork strategy<https://ec.europa.eu/food/farm2fork_en> on
climate resilience and food sovereignty in East Africa. The report analyses future
opportunities and risks that the new EU-policy direction could bring from the perspectives
of sustainable economy, just transition and climate justice. Taking an East African
viewpoint, the study analyses policy coherence between the EU Farm to Fork strategy and
key African land use, food and climate strategies. The study is based on key informant
interviews, policy and media analysis, and has been funded by the "Towards Open, Fair
and Sustainable Europe in the World" EU Presidency Project.
The authors, Kevin Teopista Akoyi and Samuel Tumwesigye, will present the report's
findings and recommendations, after which a Q&A session and open discussion will
follow. We welcome participants' ideas about how the report findings can be used to
support the future advocacy work of Fingo and its partners.
Briefly about the authors:
Kevin Teopista Akoyi (PhD Bio-economics) has over 25 years of broad experience in
agricultural policy and has worked in government, academia, and NGOs in the field of
agricultural policy and research, rural development and value chain development in Uganda
and various African countries. Her recent projects have included an AU study to inform the
development of an African Food Policy and the Uganda National Adaptation Plan for the
Agricultural Sector.
Samuel Tumwesigye (PhD Researcher at KU Leuven, Belgium) is a rural development expert who
has conducted research and policy analysis to generate evidence for agriculture and rural
development while working at FAO Mozambique, IFAD Uganda, UNDP Uganda and Bangkok Regional
Hub. He has recently been involved in climate change adaptation planning and policy
development in Uganda. As a member of the national technical working group developing the
National climate change policy, National Organic agriculture policy, and National
Adaptation Plan for the Agriculture Sector in Uganda, he has led regulatory impact
analyses and quasi-experimental research.
