The Finnish Committee for European Security (STETE) has the pleasure of
inviting you to a seminar:

NEW MEDIA AND CONTEMPORARY CRISES

On Friday 10 June 2011 at 09:30-12:30 at Helsingin Pääpostitalo
(Missiotila), Mannerheiminaukio 1A (A entrance), First Floor, Helsinki.

Due to the technological evolution, the so-called new media has been
said to have challenged the traditional journalism, as it enables
ordinary citizens to participate in spreading information and news in
"real time". Because the new media is also more difficult to control, it
has become popular as an alternative information channel in various
types of crisis situations.

The purpose of the seminar is to look into what kind of difference does
the new media make in contemporary crisis situations. The seminar covers
topics, such as new media's influence on social and political reforms,
as well as the Wikileaks phenomenon and its meaning to freedom of speech
and national security. We will also hear the latest insights from Egypt
with regards to the recent events taking place in the country.

Speakers:

Jyrki Iivonen, Director of the Unit, Media and Communications Unit,
Ministry of Defence

Nadine Hani Abdalla, Researcher, Arab Forum for Alternatives Studies,
Cairo, Egypt

Janne Hopsu, journalist, MTV3

Tapio Kujala, University of Tampere

Risto Kunelius, University of Tampere (TBC)

Coffee will be served before the seminar, starting at 9:00. We kindly
ask you to confirm your participation at the latest on Friday 3 June.
The event's language will be English.
