Dear recipient of the KEPA mailing list,

If your organization or partner organization is involved in development work
in Tanzania, the following seminar might be of interest:

SEMINAR ON FUNDING AND SUSTAINABILITY CHALLENGES OF NGOS IN TANZANIA
Date: Thursday, 9th June 2011, from 8 AM. to 4:30 PM.
Venue: Blue Pearl Hotel, Ubungo, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Background and purpose of the seminar:

Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) perform important work in many areas
of social development in Tanzania: work with vulnerable groups of society
(children, especially orphans; women; people with disabilities; unemployed
youths; elderly people; farmers; and others.), work for the protection of
the environment; work on health-related issues (HIV/AIDS, malaria, and
others); and work to ensure the correct use of public funds (e.g. government
expenditure tracking projects). NGOs give citizens the possibility to
actively participate in society and social development.

A major problem faced by NGOs in the country is the challenge to secure the
necessary funding for sustainable implementation of activities. Funding
often is donor-driven, focuses on short-term projects, and leaves little
space for long-term activities and sustainability. Recent economic and
financial crises in many Western countries have led to a reduction of donor
funding, with negative effects on sustainability of NGO activities.

The seminar aims at raising awareness on the positive work performed by
local NGOs for the benefit of Tanzanians, and on the funding and
sustainability challenges they are currently facing. It aims at promoting a
dialogue between representatives of the Government, of NGOs, of donor
institutions, of business entrepreneurs, and of the academic world, in order
to discuss possibilities for increasing the funding basis and sustainability
of NGO work in Tanzania. The seminar also includes guest speakers from
Finland, who explain the funding model of Finnish NGOs.

The seminar is organised by the Tanzania Council for Social Development
(TACOSODE), national umbrella organisation of NGOs in Tanzania, and the
Finnish Federation for Social Welfare and Health (STKL), a national umbrella
organisation of NGOs in Finland. The seminar is supported by the Ministry
for Foreign Affairs of Finland.
