Yesterday, the NGO Working Group on Women, Peace and Security (NGOWG) published the letter and distributed it to Member States and UN leadership. This year, 380 civil society organizations from 88 countries around the world endorsed the letter, signaling powerful global support for the work of women human rights defenders, peacebuilders and civil society leaders. Our collective key message is for all Member States, the UN and the Security Council to respect and protect those at the heart of the WPS agenda — women human rights defenders, peacebuilders and civil society leaders — and to defend their right to continue their work, free of fear of reprisal, harassment or abuse. Our key recommendations to Member States include calling on them to: * Immediately stop intimidation, attacks and reprisals against all human rights defenders; * Prevent threats and violence against women human rights defenders, peacebuilders and civil society leaders; * Call on Secretary-General António Guterres to ensure that the UN provides all necessary protection and support to those at risk or who have faced retaliation or reprisals; and * Ensure women civil society representatives regularly brief the Security Council without fear of reprisal.
